I know. The difference between Christian Life Coaching & Spiritual Direction can be a bit confusing. When people contact me, they often don’t know which service is best for them to engage. So, I want to take a moment to address it.
Christian Life Coaching, at its core, is about moving into action.
Christian Life Coaching culminates in tangible next action steps. It is slightly more about doing, rather than being. On the surface, it looks very pragmatic, but almost always goes into the inner workings of the soul. That’s when Christian Life Coaching begins to look more like Spiritual Direction. People that contact me for Christian Life Coaching often recognize they need Spiritual Direction first, before moving back into the practical world of action steps. You can learn more about Christian Life Coaching on my Christian Life Coaching page.
Spiritual Direction, at its core, is about discerning what God is up to in our lives.
It really is being, grounding, identity, rest and clarity. Some people that contact me for Spiritual Direction recognize pretty quickly, they’ve heard well from God and now have a response they need help with, and consequently, move into Christian Life Coaching. You can learn more about Spiritual Direction on my Spiritual Direction page.
The processes are much more alike than different.
Both make use of open-ended questions, designed to draw out what’s really going on in your interior world. Both involved and intentional listening toward the Holy Spirit. Both types of sessions start with asking you what you would like to discover today. Both are more art than science. And, both will help you draw nearer to God, grow in faith, and deal with your “stuff.”
The good news is that you do not have to decide which is best for you.
Basically, when we are in a professional relationship together, we’re really doing both processes at the same time. Our conversations will zoom in and out on various topics, some much more spiritual-feeling and some much more practical-feeling. The goal in any session is to walk away with 1-3 things to ponder or implement before our next meeting.
Two for one is usually better than one, right?
Why hire only a Christian Life Coach? Why hire only a Spiritual Director? Why not hire both for the price of one? I love what I do, I truly do, and it is my privilege to walk with so many people in their journey toward “life to the full.” I’d love to engage in this kind of relationship with you too.
